17th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“’Jesus said to his disciples, “Do you understand all these things?”
They answered, “Yes.” And Jesus replied, “Then every scribe who has been instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.” (Mt. 13: 51-52)
“The church of Matthew has leaders among whom are a group designated as “scribes” (Mt. 23:34)). Like the scribes of Israel, they are teachers. It is the Twelve and these their later counterparts to whom this verse applies. The scribe…instructed in the kingdom of heaven knows both the teaching of Jesus (the new) and the law and prophets (the old) and provides in his own teaching both the new and the old as interpreted and fulfilled by the new.”
Could this also be an personal moment of the inspired author of St. Matthew’s Gospel, so noticeably a Jewish Christian steeped in Jewish law and scripture? Eager to present the saving person and message of the Lord Jesus and who, for these few words, looks back with nostalgia on his upbringing and former life as a Jew.
