“So Jesus said again, “Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.
I am the gate.
Whoever enters through me will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture. A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.”” (John 10:7-10)
Christ the Shepherd creates a new community over and against the bankrupt Temple leadership which sees, hears and interacts with Jesus and then rejects Jesus. The immediate previous narrative (9:1-38) provides background for this situation of “the Jews.” They do not belong to the flock of the shepherd because they do not recognize his voice and they do not follow him. They are now blind (9:41) thieves, robbers (10:1) and strangers (v. 5). This is a reversal of the experience of the man born blind (9:34).
