This Sunday and the two following Sundays are chapter 13 of St. Matthew.   Three parables in a row.  What is a parable?

The word “parable” comes from the Greek parabolē, meaning “comparison” or “juxtaposition”.

A parable is a short story or narrative that uses familiar life experiences to convey a moral or spiritual lesson, often revealing the mysteries of the Kingdom of God.

The Lord Jesus made extensive use of parables to teach about the Kingdom of God and guide believers in moral and spiritual understanding They serve several purposes:

  • Reveal spiritual truths: Parables illustrate complex theological concepts in a relatable way, making divine truths accessible to ordinary people.
  • Encourage reflection: Many parables contain elements that are unusual or thought-provoking, prompting listeners to think deeply about their meaning.
  • Different levels of understanding: Jesus often used parables to convey messages that were clear to his disciples but challenging for the general crowd, emphasizing the need for spiritual insight and attentiveness.
