Livestream/Mass Information for the Sixth Sunday of Easter, May 5, 2024
6th Sunday of Easter
May 5, 2024
“As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments you will remain in my love.” (John 15:10)
These verses advance the idea of the vine and the branches. The reality behind the symbol is, as suspected, intimate friendship. Jesus invites to an abiding love of Him, a love that is committed, that is sure. The sign of fidelity is the same as in all friendships: taking seriously what the friend takes seriously (here, expressed as “my commandments”). The measure of the mutual love of disciples is Jesus’ love for them, even to death. Its outcome will be joy. Since the disciples of the Gospel give little proof of deserving love in return for their love, the initiative lies with Jesus as lover and friend. That is the cue. In emulating Jesus one loves, not only those deserving of love but all in the company, lovable or not. Such was the Master’s way with the disciples. It is God’s way with the human family.
“I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father.”(John 15:15). As with perfect friendships from time immemorial all secrets are shared, both from above and below. Friendship at its fullest destroys the barriers of above and below.
